A6M5c Type 52 Zero Fighter

Code named "Zeke" by the Allies, the Type 52c was powered by a 14 cylinder twin row NK1F Sakae 21 engine of 1,130hp, of which later versions were alcohol injected. In addition to the machine guns and cannons, the 52c could also carry four air to air rockets or four 30kg air to air bombs or two 60kg air to ground conventional bombs. The air to air systems were initiated in an attempt to disrupt B-29 operations by firing the rockets or dropping the small bombs on the formations. The bombs were timed to air-burst a certain number of seconds after release from the fighters.

AD-6 Skyraider

Piston-powered and combat-tough. The tough and versatile A-1 Skyraider was among the final piston-powered, prop-driven fighter aircraft produced just before the dawn of the "Jet Age." B-17F Memphis Belle

The B-17 Flying Fortress "Memphis Belle" was the most famous bomber, because she was the first heavy bomber in Hitler's European war theater to complete 25 combat missions and keep her entire crew alive. The Memphis Belle was named for pilot Capt. Robert K. Morgan's wartime sweetheart, Ms. Margaret Polk. The preserved Memphis Belle remains on display at Mud Island in Memphis, Tennessee.

B-29 Superfortress

The Superfortress was used extensively in the China/Burma/India theatre, the SW Pacific during WWII and later in the Korean conflict. Although it was used at low altitude over Japan, it was designed and built as a high altitude, long range strategic heavy bomber capable of carrying a 20,000 lb bomb payload. C-119C Flying Boxcar

Developed by Fairchild from the previous C-82 Packet, the C-119 was one of the most important transport planes of the Fifties. The C-119C model had two 28 cylinder Pratt&Whitney four row radial R-4360 engines and it was distinguished from later types partly by its single wheel front undercarriage and different tail design. Production of the C-119C was speeded up when the Korean War broke out and these planes were soon being used for most of its transport missions. At the end of the war, a large number of the planes were supplied to the French, who used them widely in Indochina.

C-130J Hercules

While it maintains the familiar lines of the Hercules, a common sight in the world’s skies for decades now, the C-130J has been extensively re-designed. The most visible change lies in the use of two 4700 HP Rolls-Royce (Allison) AE2100D3 engines, with six-blade composite-material propellers that ensure silent running and low fuel consumption. High performance features include an excellent rate of climb and an extended range of action thanks to the new engines. An equally important development is the avionics: the cockpit, in fact, is equipped with new digital instruments and a Head-Up Display that provides the pilot with a constant stream of data without him having to look away from the cockpit window. Douglas A-26 A/B Invader

The Douglas A-26 entered the Second World War at a relatively late date: the first eighteen examples were, in fact, sent to the European front in the summer of 1944. However, shortly afterwards, the Invader demonstrated its worth, and on the cease fire the troops equipped with these planes had flown more than 11,000 missions. Also in the Pacific, in only a few months, the Invader consolidated its fame as the crew’s favourite bomber. After a short period of time, the A-26 found itself fighting again in Vietnam. It then became the average standard bomber of the USAF used in the War in Korea. It was in this conflict that the A-26C variant was more widely used; characterised by P&W R-2800-27 engines and a glass nose, which contained the Norden bombsight. Many examples were successively supplied to smaller air forces, which kept them in service until the middle of the 70’s.
