The Bf 109 Messerschmitt was first flown in 1935 and became one of the most common fighter planes in history, towards the end of the 2nd World War production reached in excess of 33,000 units. The G-10 version was developed late in the war it had a larger 1,475 HP engine and heavier armor-plating.

North American P-51D Mustang 8th AF

Of the several variations of this famous fighter, the P-51D is generally accepted as the definitive Mustang and was the first production version with the "Bubble" canopy. More "D" model Mustangs were built than all other Mustang variants combined, with a total of 9,603 coming off production lines. 45 squadrons of the famed U.S. 8th Airforce, stationed in England were equipped with the P-51D, which could now escort and protect the heavy bombers all the way to and from targets on the European continent. P-51D Mustangs went to fight in the later Korean conflict and it last flew combat in 1956 in the deserts to the Middle East, when Israel used Spitfires, Messerschimitts and Mustangs together in the Mid East conflict.

OS2U Kingfisher

Originally designed in the late 1930s as an observation aircraft, the OS2U Kingfisher had a remarkable career aiding the Allies in rescue and reconnaissance missions during WWII. Kit features a choice of open or closed canopies, optional parts for wheeled and float versions, an optional dolly to model the "floatplane" version on land, pilot and gunner figures and decals for two versions: 1. P-38F Glacier Girl

During the summer of 1942, a flight of two B-17 Bombers and six P-38 Fighters were being flown to England from the United States in support of the war in Europe. The planes flew into a massive storm system near Iceland. In an attempt to avoid the storm the flight turned back for the safety of Greenland. But, again, they ran into storms. Their only chance for survival was to crash land on the glacial wastes of Greenland. Although the first P-38 plane to attempt landing flipped over, all remaining aircraft got down without significant injuries to any of the men. After eleven days the men were rescued by a team from a US Army weather station stationed at Angmagssalik, Greenland. The warplanes were abandoned on the glacier and after the first winter never to be seen again.

On August 1, 1992 at 2:32 p.m., after four months of laborious work, a seven-member team surfaced the first and only P-38 and christened her "Glacier Girl". Upon her return to the United States, she soon found her home in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Located at the Middlesoboro-Bell County Airport, she was restored to flyable condition by a team of restoration experts.

The unorthodox design features of the P-39 were conceived as early as 1936, when the aircraft engineers took on the task of designing an aircraft they considered to be the ultimate for air warfare. By locating the engine behind the cockpit and driving the propeller through an eight foot extension shaft and reduction gear box, the nose section was made available for the installation of heavy armament.

P-47N Thunderbolt

The P-47N - the last variant produced - was initially developed to escort B-29 bombers during air raids over Japan. The most distinguishing feature of the "N" variant was its in-wing 50-gallon (190-liter) fuel tanks, which extended the aircraft's range by 2,000 miles (3,200 km). P-51B/C Mustang

Early P-51's were initially used primarily for ground attack duties and utilized an Allison engine. Then in 1943, improved P-51's, using the British Merlin engine coupled with a new supercharger began to arrive in England, and the difference was considerable. P-51D Mustang

The P-51 Mustang was the most popular and widely produced fighter of World War II. Total production of all models reached 15,576 planes. The P-51 had a top speed of 437 mph. Armament consisted of six .50 caliber machine guns mounted in the wings. The P-51 Mustang is regarded today as a classic in piston powered fighter design.
